iBot4CRMs consortium partner Instituto Technologico de Aragon (ITA) will be presenting an e-poster at Ecomondo 2026 in Rimini, Italy on a “Flexible Digital Twin architecture for data-driven modelling and optimisation of waste recovery processes”. Organised annually, Ecomondo is one of Europe’s biggest green exhibitions held each year in November in Rimini, Italy mainly to showcase new green technologies for sustainability experts.

At the exhibition, ITA will present the e-poster to explain the general modelling structure and experimental characterisation method for waste recovery processes. This system can be adapted for different facilities and used for design and operation as part of a digital twin system.

According to the abstract,”The proposed approach is compatible with physics-based representations and data-driven descriptions of the separation methods. Given the wide range of processes such as magnetic, eddy current separation, air sorting by optical and inductive detection, among others, this flexibility of the model can be well adapted to the availability of data, which are generally scarce. The objective of the digital twin is both supporting process sizing during the design phase and operating parameter online optimisation.”

In our project, we will integrate advanced AI capabilities, including perception, reasoning and self-learning, database of selected CRMs and emerging technologies, such as advanced sensing, digital twins, and flexible manipulation to deal with changing environments and heterogeneous products and material flows for efficient human-robotic collaboration in waste sorting.

The final goal is to create new opportunities and capabilities in recovery and recycling of critical raw materials (CRMs) with efficient and effective processes that improve workers’ welfare in End-of-Life (EoL) products and waste streams management and processing.
